Sights from Gaylord Palms ICE featuring Shrek the Halls

Last week I left unseasonably warm Iowa and hopped a plane to Orlando with my girls. Our destination- the Gaylord Palms resort. Our plans- to play in snow and ICE. (Video tour of ICE below- including a ride down the ice slide!)

But instead of bringing my husband along- he unfortunately had to work- we brought Grandma! Because you can read my tales of ICE at Uptake and Blissfully Domestic, I thought I would get my mom’s thoughts on our trip.

I recently had the privilege of accompanying my daughter and granddaughters to the Gaylord Palms in Orlando, Florida, for two and a half days of fun and relaxation.

The resort is beautifully designed and decorated; the staff is wonderfully helpful and courteous. Everything you might wish for is under one roof: restaurants, shops, luxury spa, entertainment, all without feeling crowded. (Be sure to wear very comfortable shoes; you will be walking the four acre compound extensively.)

Brenna and Caelan were in awe of the decorations and pointed out displays that I would have overlooked. One of the fountains was under repair and the girls were so concerned about it. Before we left, the fountain was fixed and I took their picture setting on the edge of the pool.

During our stay, we saw ICE, the fantastic sculpture featuring Shrek and all his friends. The display is crafted from 200 tons of ice and is breathtaking. Also featured is SNOW, a winter wonderland, especially for those who live in more tropical areas. Since Iowa has not had snow that has stayed on the ground yet this season, Brenna and Caelan enjoyed building snow sculptures. We also enjoyed the movie “Puss In Boots.” This is a great movie for the whole family.

Later, we decorated gingerbread houses and families at Gingy’s house. All materials are included and provided lots of sticky fun! We managed to pack our projects and take them home with minimal damage.

Gingerbread Decorating with Gingy

Caelan very seriously informed us that she was Gingy’s girlfriend and an argument ensued when Brenna declared that she was his girlfriend too! Caelan was very adamant that SHE was his girlfriend, and when we asked about Mrs. Man (Gingy’s real name is Gingerbread Man), Caelan’s response what that Mrs. Man wasn’t real.

Brenna had a very loose top tooth and we tried to enlist Shrek to help pull it out; very comical since his fingers were too large to fit in her mouth. We had a lot of fun teasing and Shrek tried to sneak up and surprise Brenna; we even tried to solicit help from Princess Fiona. Great fun!

Shrek & Fiona Discuss Brenn'as Loose Tooth

During our stay, two scavenger hunts were featured. We had a lot of fun looking for Coca Cola bears, hidden in niches and displays throughout the resort. Some were difficult to spot but we managed to find the 10 bears with clues and most of the bears without clues as well. The Magic Bean hunt won activity books and a bean to take home and plant.

In retrospect, this is probably not a trip I would have taken on my own; most of my pleasure came from watching Brenna and Caelan and their enjoyment. In our hectic world, all too often we forget the wonder of discovery; being able to travel with my family and especially to view the world through the eyes of a child makes it the best experience of all.

We so thoroughly enjoyed ICE at Gaylord Palms that I have the idea of visiting each Gaylord resort over the next few years and experiencing ICE at each one! Check out what is going on at the other Gaylord resorts this Christmas:

The Boardwalk Inn: Coastal Elegance at Walt Disney World

View from my balcony at the Boardwalk Inn, Walt Disney World

I was treated to pure Disney luxury during my “5 stars to Mickey bars” weekend at Walt Disney World.  My room at the Boardwalk Inn, a deluxe resort at Walt Disney World, was incredible.  Decorated in tones of pale sunshine and crisp white linens, it felt fresh and clean.  The view of the boardwalk from my balcony almost had me believing I could breathe in the saltiness of sea air.

My room

My room was a “standard with a water view”.  The bed was very comfortable, the desk had enough outlets for both my laptop and phone to charge at the same time.  The addition of the couch was nice; the extra sitting room would help make this a comfortable room for a family.  I especially loved my small balcony with its’ metal chairs.  It was wonderful to sit out there in the mornings and evenings with the small treats the hotel had left and just relax.

(Note:  because I was a guest of Walt Disney World I received turn down service, evening snacks, a fruit basket and a cheese plate.  These amenities are available with concierge service room packages.)

Carefully folded towels at the Boardwalk Inn, Walt Disney World

Mickey towels

Telltale signs of “the mouse” were everywhere: from the carefully folded towels on my bed to the toiletries.  The hallway carpets even had his image woven into the designs.

Throughout the resort are the small touches that make Disney resorts memorable.  From the antique silent picture viewers in the hall to the immense waterhorse chandelier and miniature carousel; everywhere you turn there is something to discover.

If your room doesn’t have a balcony (or even if it does) take some time to sit on the large veranda at the rear of the lobby.  The white wicker chairs come on various sizes to fit every guest, and the conversation couch makes it easy to relax, lean back and chat with friends and family.

While the Boardwalk Inn is only a 5 minute walk from Epcot and a short boat ride from Hollywood Studios there is plenty here to keep you occupied.  The Luna Park pool is a favorite of kids; a more relaxing swim can be found at the resort’s two quiet pools.  Kids of all ages can enjoy the arcade and families gather at the Community Hall for crafts or board games.  My personal favorite is the Surrey bikes that can be rented for a true family bike ride!

You can enjoy everything from fine dining to pub food on the Boardwalk, and don’t miss a morning pastry at the Boardwalk Bakery.  It’s the perfect way to begin a magical day.

Boardwalk Inn Facts

Room options range from standard rooms, to suites to garden cottages.  Rates begin at $340 per night for a standard room during the low season.

Driving to the resort?  You can self park or, for a fee, have a valet park your car.

Transportation around the parks and resorts is free to resort guests via bus or boats (water taxis).

Disney’s Magical Express can pick you up at the Orlando International Airport and take you directly to your resort and handle your luggage for you (expect a 2-3 hour wait for your luggage to arrive).  If you are taking the Magical Express to the airport after your stay the resort can handle everything for you- from checking in for your flight to transporting your luggage.  (Do not check in for your flight online!  If you do the resort can not check you in and you will have to handle your own luggage.  Yes, I did that.)

High speed internet is an additional fee (my biggest pet peeve in expensive hotels and resorts).

Epcot World Showcase: Travel the World

Much of my “free time” during my culinary tour of Disney World was spent wandering through the World Showcase at Epcot®.  I was trying to make myself feel better about not going to Ireland this year.  While I don’t have a large amount of tips I do have some photos I really want to share.

The cast members you’ll encounter in each “country” are actually from that country, which helps you forget you’re in Walt Disney World and adds to the realism of the experience.

Epcot® Facts and Helpful Links

Epcot® covers 300 acres- twice the size of the Magic Kingdom- and is divided into two parts: Future World and World Showcase

World Showcase has 11 countries: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, United States, Japan, Morocco, France, United Kingdom and Canada.  Each country has many traditional culinary delights.  Here’s a great rundown of the street foods of the World Showcase.

Theme park tickets begin at $79 for one day (per adult) and $68 for one day (per child). Prices will adjust depending on how many days you purchase and passes you add to your package. Visit the Disney World website for more ticketing information.

If you’re at Epcot® you must ride Soarin’ located in the Land Pavilion.  I’m not a fan of amusement park rides- and I went on this one twice.  Combining the feeling of flying with the scents of the landscape (evergreen, oranges and the ocean to name a few) this is a ride your entire family will love- and want to do again!

Views from Epcot’s International Flower and Garden Festival

Every spring Epcot® blooms with color during the International Flower and Garden Festival.  With Disney’s memorable characters in topiary almost everywhere you look you may spend an entire weekend trying to find them all (apparently I completely missed Tiana who was near the Test Track).

The Festival includes Garden Tours (ages 16 and up, $59), Garden Town Breakfast ($60), Behind the Scenes tours, concerts and gardening show with tips and ideas.  (Prices correct as of today’s date; theme park admission extra.)

Dates for 2010 are: March 3, 2010 – May 16, 2010.  Click here for the Festival Guide (pdf).

Tips for keeping your Disney vacation happy

Disclosure:  This trip was part of a Disney Media event.  My transportation, lodging and meals were provided by Disney.  All photos and thoughts are my own.

Avoid Sadness at the Happiest Place on Earth

Celebrate Today, Walt Disney World banner

Celebrate Today

Now, I’m no expert on Walt Disney World, but I just want to share some observations from my weekend at the Mouse’s House.

1)  Walt Disney World is HUGE. To give you a visual- it’s twice the size of Manhattan.  Without the subway.  Walt Disney World has free transportation that will take you from park to park, just be prepared for each trip to take anywhere from 30-45 minutes, depending on how long you wait for the bus.

2) Sometimes it is quicker to walk- which I found out after catching a boat from Epcot to the Boardwalk Inn…  And saw a man walking with two small children reach it before me.

3) Your kids are going to get tired. I saw it over and over again…  Children asking to take a nap; kids falling asleep on buses only to have their parents wake them so they could go to another park; parents yelling at their kids because they were slow, cranky or just didn’t want to “have fun” anymore.

I understand that, for many families, a trip to Walt Disney World is a once-in-a-lifetime event (it probably will be for mine) and the cost can be enormous.  You want to get your “money’s worth”.  But you just can’t see it all in one trip- no matter how hard you try.  So don’t try.  Pick a couple parks to really enjoy, take a day to spend by the pool and another day to play at Downtown Disney.  Slow down.  Take breaks.  And make magical memories.

Side note:  As I watched parents yell and kids cry I wondered if that is part of the reason that people think travel with kids is an oxymoron.  Do they have memories of terrible family vacations?

4)  Rent someplace with a kitchen. Walt Disney World has amazing food and something for everyone.  But you will easily spend $100 per person per day if you only eat at the parks.  Do yourself a favor and stay at a resort or a condo with a kitchen.  (Do the math, of course, to see what works best for your family.)  Other options:  free dining for fall or purchase a Walt Disney World dining plan.

5) Do your research! I went into Walt Disney World unprepared.  I planned it that way as I knew much of my time would be scheduled.  And I was still overwhelmed.  I met a couple great ladies from the Walt Disney World Moms Panel.  Everyone on this panel is a Disney-phile and can answer any question you throw at them.  So ask!  The ladies I met are Kathie F and Amy R.  These ladies amazed me with their knowledge and tips.  You can ask them Disney questions directly from their (linked) profile pages.  Below their bio at the right is a button that says “ask a question”.  And tell them I sent you.

Have a magical time at Disney!

Eating Around the Happiest Place on Earth

While my culinary trip to Walt Disney World began and ended with travel trials, what happened in between was truly magical.  The fine folks at Disney made me feel like a princess and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity!

Because my trip was a “culinary tour” it began, rightfully so, with a few “little” gifts in my amazing room at the Boardwalk Inn and Resort.

Fruit Basket and Cooking with Mickey

A huge basket of fruit, a bottle of wine, a bottle of Evian and a “cooking with Mickey” gift set.  Oh, and a box of truffles.  What a welcome!

It wasn’t until the next morning that I discovered the cheese plate in the refrigerator.

Cheese Plate at Boardwalk Inn, Walt Disney World

Because of my flight delay and the subsequent missed connection I completely missed the events of the first day.  I arrived in my room, wiped the airplane off me as best I could, changed clothes and headed straight to Raglan Road in Downtown Disney for a pint of Magners and some fish & chips.  The live Irish music helped wash away the day; the Magners didn’t hurt either.  It’s much like my beloved Kansas City pub, just larger.

Returning to my room I found the turn down service delightful, with a nostalgic card and salt water taffy.

The next morning featured a character breakfast at Cape May at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club.  The buffet was beautiful and has something for everyone: fresh fruit, a yogurt bar, pastries, egg dishes, biscuits & gravy, and, of course, mini Mickey waffles.  Yum!  We were visited by Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse and Goofy.

Character Breakfast at Cape May, Disney Yacht and Beach Club

After breakfast we had a tour of one of the rooms at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club and learned about the Disney Vacation Club.  While the vacation club isn’t an option for my family I can see how it is nice for some families.  I really appreciated that the rooms are also available to non-club members.  The 2-bedroom suite we toured had a kitchen and the resort amenities.  It’s a great option for families.

Then it was off to the Magic Kingdom.  We caught the street parade, wandered through the park, rode the Pirates of the Caribbean ride and did some shopping.

Cinderella's Castle, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World

Our group split up then; I headed over to Epcot®, which ended up being where I spent much of my free time as the Epcot® Interntional Flower and Garden Festival was going on.  And wanted to wander through the “world”.

Entering Epcot during the International Flower and Garden Festival

I didn’t have a lot of time as we had dinner reservations at Fort Wilderness Resort for the Hoop-Dee-Doo Review; a “campfire” dinner and show.  Apparently the show hasn’t changed since its inception 35 years ago!  It was good, campy fun with “campfire” food served on tin plates.

After dinner our group set off for Epcot.  With an hour of free time a few of us rode Soarin (what a sensory experience!) before our dessert party at the United Kingdom Pavilion with front row seats for IllumiNations, the nightly fireworks extravaganza.  Eclairs, brownies, chocolate dipped strawberries and more were offered with a bevy of beverages.

Dessert Party at the UK Pavilion at Epcot

IllumiNations went well beyond your typical fireworks show, it was really incredible and difficult to put into words.

After such a full day I was exhausted so I returned to my room while the rest of the group went to Jellyrolls.  And I found this (pardon the photo taken with my phone):

Milk and Cookies delivered to my room at the Boardwalk Inn, Walt Disney World

Yes, milk and three. huge. cookies.  Along with the wonderful turn down service.  Can you say “food coma”.

The dining adventure continued the next morning at Kouzzinna by Cat Cora.  A wonderful Mediterranean twist to breakfast.  I enjoyed the Kouzzinna Stack: Two Poached Eggs, Kalamata Olive toast, Artichoke Spread and Sweet potato Hash with choice of Bacon or Chicken Sausage.

Kouzzinna Stack at Kouzzinna by Cat Cora, the Boardwalk, Walt Disney World

With that meal the culinary tour officially ended.  I said goodbye to the other attendees, headed to my room, packed and walked back to Epcot.  I wandered through the World Showcase at a more leisurely pace, had lunch at Sommerfest in German: brat with saurkraut, Black Forest roulade and Fanta.

I did my gift shopping at Epcot and along the Boardwalk.  With one meal voucher left- and a long night of travel ahead- I made a final stop at the Boardwalk Bakery for dinner “to go”: Mozzarella and tomato on focaccia and a Mickey muffin.

Mozzarella and Tomato on Focaccia and Mickey Muffin, Boardwalk Bakery, the Boardwalk, Walt Disney World

You can see that Walt Disney World has a wide variety of food; definitely something for every palate.  I’ll be following up over the next couple of weeks with more detailed posts.  It was definitely a whirl-wind weekend; I look forward to taking my family in the future and enjoying more of what Walt Disney World has to offer.

Disney- Here I Come!

Early Friday morning I will leave my family to their dreams and board a plane for the “Happiest Place on Earth’.  Now, the irony of this trip isn’t lost on me…  When I began sharing family travel tips online back in 2005 it was because the only information I could find was about family trips to Disney (or other “kid friendly” places).  That said, I’m looking forward to my adventure.

I’m not sure yet what to expect but I did get a few hints…

The theme is “From 5 Stars to Mickey Bars”.  It’s all about the food.

I’ll be staying here:

Disney Boardwalk Inn (courtesy of Walt Disney World)

Dinner will be around the Boardwalk and Epcot Friday evening.  (I’m very excited about Epcot- it’s what I most want to experience!)

Saturday morning will begin with a character breakfast at Cape May at Disney’s Beach Club Resort.  Dinner that night will be the dinner show Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at The Campsites at Fort Wilderness Resort.

Sunday’s breakfast is back at the Boardwalk at Kouzzina by Cat Cora.

All I know, beyond that, is that I’ll get park tickets, FASTPASSES and meal vouchers.

I’ll be taking pictures and sending out notes all weekend. If you want to follow the journey in “real time” I have a few suggestions:

We’ll be using #DisneyMedia on Twitter; you’ll be able to follow all of us attending the event. (If you aren’t following me yet I’m @iatraveler.)

If you aren’t on Twitter (and don’t want to be) become a fan of the new Family Rambling Fan Page as I’ll post photos and quick notes there, too! Click the button below to become a fan!
