Sights from the Fermanagh Lakelands for #IGTravelThursday

County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland, doesn’t draw the casual tourist. But the sights to be discovered as you drive through the Fermanagh Lakelands are just as incredible as those you will see anywhere else.
Our drive around Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, revealed ancient places, nature in force, and stunning craftsmanship.
This ancient stone circle, circular cairn, and alignment are off the tourist track. We were the only visitors, other than the curious cows in the pasture.
The Janus figure – a carving with faces on both sides- actually predates the Roman Janus carvings. Located in Caldragh Cemetery on Boa Island, few tourists find their way to this ancient site.
The very grand entrance to Castle Caldwell Forest gives you a good idea of the past influence of this estate.
With its wet climate, Ireland’s foliage grows lush and green. It didn’t take long for the forest to reclaim the castle.
Early Belleek pottery was used across Ireland. Today the company creates some of the most beautiful pottery – including stunning baskets which are hand woven.

Beautiful exploring, hard to believe that there are no tourist around. Maybe it’s just the time of the year – we experienced the same in Mallorca the past week, but summer would be a completely different story? I love that photo of the castle entrance!
houseofanais These images were actually taken last June. So the beginning of ‘tourist season’, but so far off the tourist track that few venture there.
I’ve been traveling around Ireland quite a bit but this was a new spot to me! Looks gorgeous, I need to put it on the list for our next trip 🙂
