Fighting a Cold – Naturally- While Traveling

My Natural Cold Fighting Remedies. Essential oils for health and wellness.

It has yet to fail to happen. At least once a year I succumb to a cold.

It begins with a scratchy throat and itchy eyes. Then the sneezing starts, followed by the runny nose.

If left to run its own course a couple days, and one raw, red nose later, the sinuses begin to clog, bringing plugged ears and a foggy brain, beginning the downward spiral of mucus and, if you are really lucky, sinus infection, before wellness finally arrives.

My annual cold usually attacks just before we set off on our first RV trip of the year, as the weather is trying to decide if spring can really arrive or if winter will try its best to hold on a few more days. But, since I began using natural remedies to fight it I have cut my annual ‘icky time’ in half.

The Natural Cold-Fighting Remedies I Use

The minute I begin to feel a scratch in my throat or a tickle deep in my ears I begin this regimen. Sometimes I am lucky and the ick that attacks everyone else will bypass me. Other times I succumb, but often for only half the time the people I know are sick.

My first order of defense is a ‘cold bomb' – a gel cap I fill with 12 drops of essential oil: 6 drops of Thieves and 3 drops each of Frankincense and Oregano. I take this 3 times a day. If symptoms seem to worsen I will take up to 4.

At the same time I begin doing these things as well:

Diffuse Purification essential oil throughout my house (RV, hotel room)

Apply RC essential oil topically at night and in a diffusing necklace during the day

Add Peppermint essential oil to hot water to drink (to keep hydrated – it also helps clear the sinuses!)

Use a Neti Pot and saline as often as necessary (best used in a hot, steamy shower, IMO)

Use Thieves Spray in my throat or Thieves cough drops for relief as needed

Carry Thieves hand sanitizer nearly everywhere to keep from spreading germs

A note on essential oils. I only share how I use oils, and offer no claims of treatment or guarantees of miracles.

While I do prefer natural remedies to synthetic drugs we don’t hesitate to visit a doctor if symptoms get worse!

  1. I love a good set of essential oils, but one of my favorite items is definitely the neti pot! The first time I used it I was in a dark place and my sinuses were out of control.

Although it feels verrrry weird the first time you use it, it clears things up immediately.

Getting sick while traveling sucks, but essential oils are definitely an easy thing to bring along!
