Holiday Inn, Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri

During a recent stay in Kansas City I used my Priority Club Rewards points for a free night at the Holiday Inn at Country Club Plaza.  While “the Plaza” has it's share of extravagant hotels this is an affordable option for families.

While you can tell this is an older hotel by some of the decor I was impressed by the immaculate-ness of the common areas.  Nothing was frayed, no carpets showed wear and the wood shone like it had been polished recently.  The large library/ lounge was very friendly with plenty of books, a large screen TV, 2 computers and plenty of seating.

Our room was very basic:  2 beds, a desk, small refrigerator, TV, dresser and a comfy chair.  Everything was very clean, the bed was firm and a pillow menu was available.  The TV had half a dozen kid-friendly channels including Disney, PBS & ABC Family- always a plus when the girls can watch TV while we get ready in the mornings.

My only problem with the room was in the bathroom.  The shower head was very short- even for me and I'm only 5'5″.

But what really made this hotel great was the people.  When I walked into the hotel I was very warmly welcomed by the bellman, Andrew.  He was also our driver that evening (the hotel has a free shuttle) and was full of information and tips for our stay.

The front desk clerks smiled as they helped me and answered my questions easily.

And the waitress in the hotel cafe…  She was incredible.  When we would thank her she would say, “My pleasure,”- and I really believe that she meant it!

While this hotel had some great amenities it is the staff that made all the difference.

  1. Jody, I just made reservations at the Crown Plaza Hotel in KC for next month. I’m heading there for work but taking my family. I had to come right over to your sight to see what you had to say about Kansas City. Ryan will have the kids during the day and my nights will be free so I’m looking forward to some family time away!
