Room for the Family at Kansas City Downtown Marriott

Last Updated on December 4, 2016 by

Within a few blocks- and an easy walk- from Kansas City's premier entertainment area, the Power and Light District, the Downtown Marriott is a great hotel for a romantic getaway or a family stay.

We stayed at the Downtown Marriott during our most recent trek to Kansas City to take in the dinosaur exhibit at Union Station.  Staff greeted us as we pulled up and asked if we wanted to self park ($13) or valet ($18).  We chose valet because, really, parking downtown is a hassle.  I was surprised that a doorman wasn't available to help with our bags or offer a luggage trolley; my husband left to hunt one down for us.

That little glich aside, our stay at the Downtown Marriott was fabulous.  We had the most amazing room.  There were eight of us (my sister's family joined us) and the hotel set us up with 3 connecting rooms: a king bedroom, a double/double bedroom and a parlor in between.

The French door entrance opened to a wet bar area and a handy mini-fridge in the small foyer before spreading out.  We had plenty of room for eight as the parlor not only had lots of room but also an additional desk, comfortable chairs, a couch that converted to a bed and a Murphy bed.  And it's own bathroom.  Priceless!

With the kids snuggled into the beds in the parlor the parents slept peacefully.  And because we had thought ahead and brought breakfast items they were all awake and enjoying cartoons when we woke in the morning.

Our rooms had a terrific view of Allis Park, directly in front of the hotel.

This is a great place to take in the Marriott's evening light show.

What your kids will love:

The hotel lobby is spacious and has fountains- perfect for making wishes.

You have choices on how to get to the second floor: elevator, escalator or, in true princess fashion, a curved grand staircase.

The pool.  On the top floor.  Not only are the views from the top of the hotel tremendous, but the 3 lane pool provides lots of splashy fun!

Apples on the desk at check-in!

Eating a hot dog from a vendor cart while watching the light show.

What you will love:

Rooms are spacious (even if you don't get a parlor).  Our king room also had a comfortable chair, couch and desk.

Floor to ceiling windows provide stunning views of downtown.

Delicious dining downstairs at Lilly's.  The brunch is filled with variety and very yummy.

Close to the excitement of the Power and Light District and only a few minutes from Crown Center and Union Station.

Exercise rooms, also on the top floor, filled with cardio equipment and weights.

Hotel facts

As with most non-budget hotels in-room wi-fi is an additional fee of $10 per day.

Room rates list on the website for $235 per night, but the hotel has some great specials as low as $119 per night.

There are 2 restaurants, a pub, a lounge and a coffee kiosk on site.

Disclosure:  The Kansas City Marriott Downtown did give me a discount on our rooms.  This did not affect my thoughts on the hotel.
