Paris Coffee Shop – Fort Worth Comfort Food

Last Updated on September 26, 2014 by Jody Halsted

Fort Worth is filled with incredible restaurants. You can find Texas sized steaks, succulent Tex-Mex, pit smoked BBQ, and fresh seafood. But when the people of Fort Worth want home cookin' they go to the Paris Coffee Shop.

As the oldest family owned and operated restaurant in Fort Worth, it would be easy to dismiss this as people being creatures of habit. But habit doesn't explain why devotees line up early on Thursday when Mike makes chicken and dumplings, knowing that once it's gone, it's gone. You see, everything here is made from scratch. Pie crusts, made with lard, are melt-in-your-mouth flaky. Massive cinnamon rolls are begun at 3:30am as to have time to knead, raise, roll and bake daily. Chicken fried steaks are pounded thin and hand breaded. Comfort food at its finest.

A comfortable place where old images of Fort Worth share the walls with autographed photos and classic album covers, the Paris Coffee Shop is about as non-pretentious as you can get. Daily visitors call to each other and joke along the long counter top while the rest of us wish we visited often enough for the waitress to bring us “the regular” moments after we sit down.

Breakfast at Paris Coffee Shop in Fort Worth

Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day and Paris Coffee Shop serves the best in Fort Worth, according to the Fort Worth Convention and Visitor's Bureau, who recommended it so highly that a few of the ladies joined us for breakfast.

The breakfast menu is simple; eggs, with or without meat, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, French Toast and omelettes. Everything is cooked to order, when you order. Between our group of 8, I'm pretty sure we ordered every item on the menu. Before our meals could be delivered Mike Smith, owner and chief pie maker of Paris Coffee Shop, hand delivered a few plate-sized cinnamon rolls. The golden exterior, drizzled with a sugar glaze, hid a soft and airy interior, with the perfect amount of chewy-ness.

Then came breakfast. French Toast…  Biscuits and gravy… Eggs and bacon… Delicious. And devoured, possibly a bit more quickly than polite.

And then there was pie. No matter the time of day you visit, you really can't leave without a slice of pie. Mike is famous for his meringues, especially the coconut cream, fluffy meringue piled high and topped with toasted coconut.

Though you'll likely leave the Paris Coffee Shop with a slight ‘food coma' and vowing to eat nothing but vegetables and water for the rest of the day, you'll soon be thinking about that pie – and plotting your return.
