Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells

Last Updated on September 12, 2013 by Jody Halsted

We don't visit many resorts in our travels, so when we do decide to visit one, we make sure it is a resort worth remembering.  Though our stay at Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells was short, the two huge waterparks, ‘hidden' wavepool and comfortable golf villa made our stay memorable – and put it at the top of my daughters' ‘must return' lists.

The Resort at Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells

Sitting at the edge of the resort town of Wisconsin Dells and atop the high banks of the Wisconsin River, Chula Vista is touted as the “most complete waterpark resort in the Wisconsin Dells”. In an area known for its waterparks, that's saying a lot!

Chula Vista Resort includes two waterparks (one indoors, one outdoors), an 18 hole golf course, a hotel, condos, golf villas, and 9 restaurants.  So you can believe when I say that you don't have to leave the resort – at all – during your stay.

Lodging at Chula Vista Resort

There are over 600 rooms at the Chula Vista Resort. From spacious guest rooms to villas that can host an extended family, you'll be able to find a room – no matter how big your brood.

We stayed in one of the Fairway Family Suites in the Golf Villas. Across the road from the main resort, our villa was quiet and spacious. The girls each had their own double bed, while Doug & I had a separate room with a king bed. A small kitchen meant we could fix our own meals (and save a little money), while a large living area and two balconies gave us plenty of room to spread out and relax.

My single issue with this room was that there was no place to hand our swimsuits to dry. Of course we could place them along the edge of the bathtub or over the shower curtain bar, but the humidity and continual use of the bathroom make this a poor option at best. I try to always bring my flexible clothesline– just in case we need it. And it worked wonderfully stretched across the balcony.

Dining at Chula Vista Resort

Within Chula Vista Resort you'll find nine restaurants, ranging from fine dining to buffet style with plenty of options. We ate a few meals on property.  The Market Fresh Buffet breakfast was filled with options- multiple types of pancakes, fresh corned beef hash, a few egg options, breakfast quiches, and plenty of pastries. Like we told our girls, “If you can't find something you like, you're not really trying.”

Our favorite restaurant is a bit “hidden” and is one of the few places on property that is only available to guests staying at Chula Vista. Margarita's Mexican Grill and Cantina is located behind the condos, nestled in the trees along the Wisconsin River. The open air restaurant is filled with umbrella'd tables and rows of pool chairs facing the wave pool. This was our ‘evening retreat' both nights of our stay; perfect for when the girls weren't done splashing around but Doug and I just wanted to relax with a drink.

Between the indoor and outdoor waterparks is Crash Landings Snack Bar which is very handy when you had a big breakfast (at the buffet) and just want something small to hold you over until dinner. Soft pretzels, ice cream, hot dogs and pizza are just a few items on the menu.

My only dining disappointment was Big Moe's. The '19th hole' at the end of the beautiful golf course, the food wasn't ‘up to par', if you will.  It was good, but not something I would, personally, return for.

Chula Vista Resort Waterparks

You would expect the “most complete waterpark resort in the Wisconsin Dells” to have an impressive waterpark. And Chula Vista doesn't disappoint. The outdoor park has options for all ages, from a splash pad for the tiny ones, to daring drops and racing slides for the bravest visitors. While Caelan was content with the smaller slides of Adventure Lagoon, Brenna (with her dad) raced on Rattlesnake Run's 350 foot long twin slides and plunged down Switchback Canyon.

The indoor waterpark was no different. While Caelan enjoyed the calmer action of the Croc Walk and the Rio Rapids Action River, Brenna was all about the action in the Mayan Temple and the huge waterslides ithat loop around the outside of the building before ending with a splash indoors.

Original Wisconsin Ducks at Chula Vista Resort
Catch a ride on a Wisconsin Duck

The Wisconsin Dells are known for their natural beauty and every visitor should, at least once, take a ride on an Original Wisconsin Duck. This amphibious vehicle WWII takes you across land and water while your tour guide makes punny jokes and shares some local history. You don't even have to leave the resort to find the Ducks- you can purchase your ticket (with a discount from the Wisconsin Dells Visitor Guide in the lobby) at the resort and enjoy a ride to and from the ‘Duck Barn' in a Duck. Like extra duck for your buck. (Those puns must have really rubbed off on me!)
