A Very Presidential #IGTravelThursday

Here at Family Rambling we cover a different topic each month. February's topic was, fittingly, Presidents.

The month began with the most ‘Presidential' of sites, Mount Rushmore.

Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, Presidential Sites
Mount Rushmore rises above the Avenue of Flags.

The southwest corner of South Dakota holds the state’s most visited site – Mount Rushmore. And really, it’s s stunning place to visit. The massive granite heads of four of our nation’s most beloved Presidents, each as tall as a 6 story building, gaze at you through the Avenue of Flags as you approach the Grand View Terrace.

But there is more to Mount Rushmore than the view. In our see-it-snap-a-photo-move-on society, many visitors don’t take the time to explore the trails surrounding the mountain, or the studio space of Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who designed the scale model of Mount Rushmore and oversaw the carving. Next, Tonya took us to Ohio, the ‘Home of Presidents'.

There’s a reason Ohio is referred to as “the home of Presidents” or “the Mother of Presidents”. Seven U.S. Presidents have been born in the Buckeye State while another simply claimed Ohio as his home.

And while you’ll find historical markers, boyhood homes, museums and memorials for William Henry Harrison, Ulysses S. Grant and Benjamin Harrison, some of my favorite Presidential sites pay homage to Ohio’s other five presidents. (read more)

Diana took us to the George H W Bush Presidential Library in College Station, TX.

This museum brings “scrapbooking” to an entirely different level. Imagine your entire life in one building. From birth to current. You might have to get ‘off the beaten track' to find some Presidential sites!

Way up in Vermont, Diana took us to the birthplace of our 21st president.

Situated on a hilly, dirt road, the Chester A. Arthur birthplace can be found off the beaten path. Passing by dairy farms, country homes, cows and horses will make for an adventure for any child. Once arriving, a parking area can be found across the street for your visit into what was once his everyday life. (read more)

With so many presidential sites across the US, I imagine this series will continue every February. Can you recommend a great presidential site?

  1. What a great idea to travel and educate the kids about the presidents this way. I’ve always wanted to visit Mt Rushmore and if we ever make it there I’ll definitely take all the children also with me.
