Tips for Choosing Airport Hotels

Last Updated on May 15, 2014 by Jody Halsted

Sometimes it’s unavoidable; due to an early flight time or a late arrival you have no choice but to stay in a hotel.

I find this happening more and more as flights from our “home” airport are climbing due to fewer flights and deals from competing airports two to three hours away are enticing us to make the drive- yes, the savings are that significant.

While I don’t have strict criteria for an airport hotel, I do have a few specifics.  These are the 4 questions I ask when choosing airport hotels:

  1. Just how close is the hotel to the airport?  And is it in a flight path?  If you’re a light sleeper you may want to be a bit farther away from the airport.
  2. If you stay at the hotel either before or after your trip are you allowed to leave your car there- and avoid airport parking fees?
  3. Does the hotel have an airport shuttle?  Is there a fee or is it complimentary?  Is it 24-hour or only during specific times?
  4. Does the hotel have complimentary breakfast?  (Especially important when traveling with kids- airport food is expensive!)  When does it begin and end?

Getting the answer to all of these questions may require a bit of phone time, though some websites that compare airport hotels know what travelers are looking for and may have the answers to these questions on the website.

HolidayExtras.com makes finding airport hotels easy in the UK – including an easy search for hotels with parking, choosing room type by double, single, triple and family and adding the option of a second room.
